This Christian Journey...
begins with a “Yes!” said in baptism and profession of faith to Jesus and receiving the blessing of salvation. (John 14) This journey continues through a lifetime of saying “Yes!” to God through listening, acting and receiving Christ’s blessings. This is a journey for all— adults, youth and children. As members and participants of First United Methodist Church, we are called to not only say “Yes!” to God as a personal response to God’s Word but also to unite together in saying “Yes!” as a community of faith. This is an exciting church to be united with; a church which is doing marvelous things for God. Say “Yes!” to participate with us in mission and ministry—your life will be transformed and you will see lives transformed by the love, grace and power of Jesus Christ.
Serving the Church:
Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment—to “love one another. By this everyone will know you are my disciples.” Our most important witness of faith to the world is our love and care for one another. Paul urges every believer to use their abilities to equip one another to grow in faith and knowledge so that we may all be like Christ. Consider ways you will say “Yes!” to the Word of God by loving and building up other believers this year. (John 13; Ephesians 4)
Serving the Community:
Jesus tells us that when we care for the “least of these” through our finances and actions, we are serving him. Jesus also directs the disciples to be his witnesses beginning in our communities. Consider ways you will say “Yes!” to the Word of God by serving those in need and being his witness in our community this year. (Matthew 25, Acts 1)
Serving the World:
Jesus does not intend for our witness of his love and salvation to remain within our church and community, rather our witness should go to the ends of the earth. Consider how you will say “Yes!” to the Word of God by joining others to care for and witness to the “least of these” in the world this year. (Acts 1)
Our witness should go to the ends of the Earth.
Prayerfully review this booklet and listen so you may say “Yes!” to God in 2014 through your service in our church, community and the world. If you are a parent, grandparent or godparent, prayerfully consider how you might help the children or youth in your care say “Yes!” to God in 2014 as well. Activities that allow the entire family to serve together are marked throughout the booklet with an asterisk (*).
